About the Event

The University of the Philippines College of Music invites the public to the third Symposium on Transcultural Philippine Music and Related Arts on Friday, 17th of February, 1-4pm at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium in Quezon City. The symposium disseminates the College's Emerging Interdisciplinary grant from the Office of the UP Vice-President for Academic Affairs.

Papers by distinguished Filipino intellectuals Dr. Epifanio San Juan Jr. ("Kontra-Modernidad: Pakikipagsapalaran sa Pagtuklas ng Sarili Nating Mapaglayang Kabihasnan"), UP Prof Emeritus Steve Villaruz ("How Do We Dance, Bridging Book and Body"), Dr. Maria Rhodora Ancheta ("The Rise of the Naughties: Humor in Katy de la Cruz’s ‘bodabil’ songs") and Dr. Elizabeth Enriquez ("Colonial Radio and Filipino Music") will tackle issues pertinent to Filipino responses to global modernity and cultural imperialism in the last century that led to a counter- or alternative modernities in the country. Innovative artistic expressions, embodying grassroots Filipino folk-popular sentiment in arts and culture emerged to constitute transcultural or resistant Philippine arts. Papers by Prof. Villaruz, Drs. Enriquez and Ancheta will be annotated with dance and music performance by UP Dance Company, UP Jazz Band (Prof. Rayben Maigue), with arranger Krina Cayabyab.

The event is free and open to the public.
