Only a few weeks left until the May 2022 Philippine national elections, and efforts to correct history, dismantle historical distortion, and continue building historical integrity have been more vital than ever before.

In the continued pursuit of historical truth and integrity, The Kingmaker, the controversial documentary film by critically-acclaimed filmmaker Lauren Greenfield on the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ widow Imelda Marcos, released its Tagalog-dubbed version last March 30, 2022, on various streaming platforms such as Youtube and Vimeo.

“The project idea came out of the screenings with OFW groups who suggested that a Filipino dubbed version of the film will make it more accessible to more Filipinos,” Active Vista Executive Director Leni Velasco said.

The Tagalized version of The Kingmaker is a collaborative effort of many OFW groups who want to address the massive efforts and tons of money to spread disinformation and muddle accuracy of many historical events perpetrated in these critical times leading up to the elections.

“The Kingmaker is a critical starting point for further discussion and research about Martial Law and the Marcoses. Primers and discussion guides on authoritarianism and disinformation will be made available in martiallaw.ph to help viewers make clearer, better-informed decisions,” DAKILA Education Director Darlene Ramos Gan added.

In partnership with Evergreen Pictures, the production behind The Kingmaker, DAKILA through its Active Vista Center will also integrate subtitles in different Philippine languages into the film. The selected languages available include Tagalog, Cebuano, Bikolano, Ilokano, and Hiligaynon.

According to DAKILA and Active Vista, “We have to be more inclusive now more than ever in advocating human rights and democracy; the people need to hear the truth in their own language.”

Interested audiences may watch the Tagalog-dubbed version of The Kingmaker on bit.ly/KingmakerPH where they can also access a discussion guide and primers to help facilitate meaningful discussions on this film and its topics.
