Diego Luna Alexander (born 29 December 1979) is a Mexican actor, producer and director. After starring in a few telenovelas, he has appeared in many films, including Y tu mamá también, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Rudo y Cursi and the Star Wars anthology film Rogue One. He is one of the founders and owners of Canana Films. Early life Luna was born in Mexico City. His mother, Fiona Alexander, was a British costume designer, who worked in the film industry and made sure that it was a life in which he would be immersed. She died in a car accident when Luna was two years old. His father, Alejandro is an acclaimed theatre, film and opera set designer, who reinforced the importance of theatre and the arts in his life. Alejandro would bring Luna to the sets and mentor him in different aspects of art, cultivating a desire to become an actor and uphold the family tradition. Career Luna played the troubled son in the telenovela, El premio mayor (1995) and starred in the critical acclaimed film Y tu mamá también (2001). He starred in Gus Van Sant's biopic film Milk (2008), as the emotionally unstable lover. He and Gael Garcia Bernal own Canana Films, which jointly produce a number of television documentaries about the unsolved murders of three hundred women in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, along with Golden Phoenix Productions (owned by Tom Golden). In 2011, Luna appeared in Katy Perry's music video for "The One That Got Away". In 2012, Luna directed his first English-language biopic film Cesar Chávez, about the eponymous labor and owner of the United Farm Workers. He also starred in Matt Piedmont's film Casa de Mi Padre. On 20 March 2015, he joined the cast for Ana Lily Amirpour's cannibal film The Bad Batch. Luna became a member of the jury for the Un Certain Regard section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Personal life Luna married Camila Sodi on 5 February 2008. They were divorced in March 2013. They have two children, including Jerónimo (born 12 August 2008) and Fiona (born 1 July 2010) named after Luna's mother. He has been dating Suki Waterhouse since 2015. He and García Bernal co-founded Ambulante A.C., the organization and film festival working to bring documentary films to some recommended places. The organization was awarded the prestigious Washington Office on Latin America Human Rights Award in 2011. In January 2015, Luna appeared on the Board of Directors, and narrated the video about the barriers and children migrating from their home country face, after seeking refuge in the United States.
