“I, The Executioner” Gains Global Acclaim as Official Selection at Cannes and Toronto International Film Festivals
Director Ryoo Seung-wan’s latest action-packed crime thriller, “I, the Executioner,” has captivated international audiences by securing back-to-back invitations to two of the world’s most prestigious film festivals: the Cannes Film Festival in May and the Toronto International Film Festival this September.
An International Sensation: Cannes & Toronto Official Selection
As an official selection in the Midnight Screening section at the 77th Festival de Cannes, “I, the Executioner” made its grand world premiere, generating waves of excitement among global critics. Screen Daily hailed it as “the most flawless, astonishing action since John Wick: Chapter 4—a sequel that surpasses the original.” Meanwhile, the South China Morning Post called it “more intense action, more solid storytelling, and a rollercoaster experience.”
Other major publications like Reuters and The Hollywood Reporter praised Director Ryoo for his ability to blend “fresh action and relatable themes,” and The Hollywood Reporter lauded his direction as a combination of “entertaining action with sharp psychological and social exploration.” Cinemateaser chimed in, calling it “a sequel that does not disappoint, arriving nearly 10 years after the commercially successful ‘Veteran.’”
Director Ryoo, who last attended Cannes 19 years ago with Crying Fist, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition, saying, “It took 50 years to get here [the Lumière Theatre]. It’s truly an honor and a meaningful moment.” His sentiment was echoed by Cannes festival director Thierry Frémaux, who remarked that the film is “even more impressive on the big screen,” only heightening anticipation among fans.
Meanwhile, “I, the Executioner” has also been chosen for the Special Presentations section at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which runs from September 5 to 15. Ryoo is no stranger to TIFF, having been featured in its Gala Presentation in 2023 with Smugglers and the Vanguard section in 2015 with Veteran. The film’s selection for these major festivals showcases its broad appeal and artistic impact, solidifying its position as a global cinematic powerhouse.
A Gripping Plot: Detective vs. Killer in a Race Against Time
In “I, the Executioner,” veteran Detective Seo Do-cheol, played by Hwang Jung-min, leads his Major Crimes Investigation Division as they track dangerous criminals around the clock. When the murder of a professor points to a series of unsolved cases, fears of a serial killer spread across the country. To make matters worse, the killer teases authorities by releasing online teasers of their next targets, pushing the city into chaos.
In an effort to catch the elusive murderer, the team brings in rookie officer Park Sun-woo, played by D.P. star Jung Hae-in. Sun-woo’s idealism and fresh perspective clash with Seo Do-cheol’s hardened approach, setting the stage for explosive twists and turns as they race against time to prevent further tragedy.
