The wait is over! The anime adaptation of “Look Back,” from Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, is set to release in Philippine cinemas on August 28. Yūmi Kawai (Plan 75) and Mizuki Yoshida (Alice in Borderland) lend their voices to lead characters Fujino and Kyomoto, respectively.

A Tale of Friendship and Art

“Look Back” is an endearing, tearjerker film that explores the beauty of friendship. Fans and critics alike have raved about its heartfelt narrative and emotional depth since its release in Japan. This anime film adaptation of a one-shot manga tells the story of two small-town girls, Fujino and Kyomoto, who are polar opposites. Fujino is overly confident, while Kyomoto is a shy shut-in. However, their shared love for drawing manga brings them together in an unexpected and profound friendship.

Stellar Animation and Direction

The coming-of-age film is animated by Studio Durian, founded by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who also directs “Look Back.” Oshiyama’s impressive portfolio includes works like “The Boy and the Heron,” “Devilman Crybaby,” and “Flip Flappers.” His expertise is evident in the stunning animation and meticulous attention to detail in this film.

Critical Acclaim and Popularity

The original “Look Back” manga was a huge hit in Japan, reaching over 4 million reads within just two days of publication. The movie adaptation has been equally successful, grossing more than 1 billion yen in less than 20 days.

Screen Rant praised the film’s animation, direction, and writing, stating, “In many ways, Look Back does an even better job of showing off Tatsuki Fujimoto’s talents than the Chainsaw Man anime did. It’s already an easy contender for the best anime film of 2024, if not the best-animated film of 2024 overall.”

But Why Tho emphasized the emotional depth of “Look Back,” writing, “While I cried when reading Fujimoto’s original manga, I felt myself weeping even more while watching the Look Back anime.” They further elaborated, “The score and the small movements of wind that carry their connection through time and space feel gargantuan even within the small scale of the film.
