Press Release January 4, 2023
Columbia Pictures’ “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is an opportunity for audiences to experience Whitney Houston’s best-known songs in the story of the telling of her life.

In bringing the story to the screen, the filmmakers obtained the original recordings of 22 Houston classics and remixed them for the state-of-the-art sound of movie theaters.

It is The Voice’s voice heard in the film, singing:

Greatest Love of All

Home

You Give Good Love

If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful (duet with Jermaine Jackson)

Where Do Broken Hearts Go

Saving All My Love

How Will I Know

I Wanna Dance with Somebody

Far Enough (unreleased)

The Star-Spangled Banner

Run To You

I Will Always Love You (Live at the Concert for a New South Africa)

Why Does It Hurt So Bad

It’s Not Right, But It’s OK

I’m Every Woman

I’m Your Baby Tonight

So Emotional

One Moment In Time

Million Dollar Bill

My Name Is Not Susan

I Didn’t Know My Own Strength

“The Impossible Medley” (I Loves You, Porgy / And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going / I Have Nothing)

For these 22 songs, supervising sound and music editor John Warhurst and music supervisor Maureen Crowe worked with the rightsholders and archives to obtain not just the master mix, but the original, raw multitrack recordings Houston made. “Those recordings were originally mixed to sound great in your car, or a home stereo,” says Warhurst. “But a movie theater – especially a Dolby Atmos movie theater – has speakers throughout.”

Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a powerful and triumphant celebration of the incomparable Whitney Houston. Directed by Kasi Lemmons, written by Academy Award® nominee Anthony McCarten, produced by legendary music executive Clive Davis and starring BAFTA Award® winner Naomi Ackie, the film is a no-holds-barred portrait of the complex and multifaceted woman behind The Voice. From New Jersey choir girl to one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time, audiences are taken on an inspirational, poignant—and so emotional—journey through Houston’s trailblazing life and career, with show-stopping performances and a soundtrack of the icon’s most beloved hits as you’ve never heard them before. Don’t you wanna dance?
