OIL PAINTING | Jason Moss
Jason Moss has been around the art circle since 1997. He graduated with a fine arts degree from the University of Santo Tomas and soon started work as an illustrator and then had stints as an animator, TV director, editorial cartoonist and instructor while pursuing his career as a young artist. Slowly, he became an integral part of the contemporary art scene in the country and created a body of work that is absorbing in its seeming simplicity while mirroring the private and secret worlds of his subject or even the artist himself.
His figures, sometimes painted as informal portraits and nudes, have an emotional pull to the viewer and quietly exude flickers of melancholy, introspection as well as psychological and sexual desires: security, bliss, youth, body parts, physical strength, companionship, sexual fantasies and freedom—all absurdly rich in meaning. His paintings are executed so confidently and technically that they also reveal Moss as a skillful graphic artist from the start. Today, he continues to produce humurous and spellbinding works with varying themes that continue to excite and engage the viewers.
DRAWING | Eleazar Abraham “Abe” Orobia
Abe Luna Orobia came from a family of artists. His father Rogelio Orobia is an impressionist painter and founder of theKapisanan ng mga Pintor sa Pilipinas, Atbp. Sining Inc.; while his mother,Fe, was from the lineage of the Luna’s. His first inclusion in the art scene was at the age of three. At five years old, he became the youngest to be included in two group shows of The First Filipino Good Samaritan Artists held at Philamlife Pavilion at U.N. Avenue Manila in 1989. Being earlier exposed in the art light, Abe had his first taste of success at age of six when he had his first solo show dubbed “Ang Unang-Kulay Pintang-Sining ni Abe Luna Orobia” at Makati Medical Center Lobby, which in turn became a sold-out event. Year 1991, together with other Filipino achievers in various fields when his works were published in an internationally released coffee-table-book “The Filipino Child” by Visitacion Dela Torre. In 1992, because of his rare talent, he was chosen to be the main-feature to the United Nations Development Fund TV Commercial as the child artist that calls for the care to the environment through his paintings. In the same year, he won the “Impressive Painting Award” to the ASEAN Children’s Painting Competition ’92 through an entry sent to Ugada-cho Tokyo, Japan.
WATERCOLOR | Eileen Bondoc-Escueta
Eileen Bondoc-Escueta’s first exhibit was in 1990 at the Holiday Inn Manila showcasing oriental paintings and scrolls called xieyi or free-style Chinese painting and brushwork learned from Professor C’ai Zhen Hui of China. Since 1994, she has been conducting painting classes at the Ayala Museum and it was the same year that she held her first solo exhibit called The Magic of the Brush. She has been exhibiting watercolor masterpieces at Ayala Museum for several occasions and her recent exhibit was calledWaterdance last May at the ArtistSpace. She’s also been part of several group exhibits both here and abroad. She is one of the founding member of Makati Artists Guild and a member of several local artist groups. ACRYLIC | Juan Nathaniel “Jonathan” G. Ranola
Jonathan Ranola is a painter, graphic designer, book illustrator, entrepreneur and art instructor. A graduate of Fine Arts, major in Advertising Arts at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila. Jonathan specialises in images created from points using pen and ink, beads, ceramic tiles or found objects and creates his masterpieces right where he is most comfortable: his family home in Bulacan where he grew up and first learned to dabble in the arts. His paintings are on permanent display in hotels such as Raffles in Makati and Paradise Hotel in Bulacan. Jonathan won honourable mention at the 2011 and 2012 Larry Alcala Illustrators’ Prize of the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY). In 2014 and 2015, his published illustrations were showcased at the Singapore National Library for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content (AFCC) organized by the National Book Development Council of Singapore. He is a member of Ang Illustrador ng Kabataan (Ank INK).
