About the Event

UP Vargas Museum opens Roberto Feleo’s exhibition titled Mito ng Aklasang Basi on March 11, Friday, 4pm at the 1F Galleries of the Museum. Mito ng Aklasang Basi further probes Feleo’s fascination with the Basi Revolt in the Ilocos and Esteban Villanueva’s series of paintings depicting this event.

The exhibit offers more layers around the historical moment and its artistic articulation in painting through what the artist calls tau-tao that aspires to be innovative, ethnosyncratic, and lavishly ornamented with mythological detail.

Roberto Feleo (b. 1954) received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Philippine Women’s University in 1982 and studied Art History at the University of the Philippines. He became a fellow at the Virginia Center for Creative Art in 1988. He co-founded Pinta Nueve and became the chief designer of Comite de Festejos.

He has exhibited locally and internationally. Aside from his art practice, Feleo is a professor of visual arts at the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He has also served as Lecturer at the School of Fine Arts and Design at the Philippine Women’s University in Manila and at the Philippine High School for the Arts in Makiling, Laguna.
