About the Event
Manila needs love. For the next two months, Carlos Celdran will be working on a performance art project/residency called “Making the Invisible City Visible" at the First United Building on Escolta Street.
This project hopes to visually articulate a sense of place for Escolta itself and nearby locales like Binondo and Quiapo. It also hopes to focus on specific heritage buildings like First United Building, Calvo Building, and the stunning El Hogar by the Pasig River.
There are a lot of quaint streets, charming alleyways, and architectural gems. It is unfortunate though that only a few people are aware of these areas. In every city map of the Manila, it seems that our urban centres begin and end in malls or business districts. Why does it seem that civilisation stops once we cross the Pasig River northward to Binondo?
So through a performative and collaborative collage, I hope to bring out into the open these commonly dismissed spots. There is much to be discovered and enjoyed; this neighborhood is pro-active, appealing and sadly, endangered. We need to get to know this city better in order to save what what’s left of our history and demand from our government to join this effort.
So walk with me this Sunday on a FUNDRAISING walk/parade of Escolta and Quiapo. Let’s check out spots, take photos, collect souvenirs, take political stands and do whatever you feel may contribute to this collaborative effort.
