Souk Kafé

Souk Kafé

When I crave for a chillier atmosphere or a quick roadtrip getaway, Tagaytay is always on the top of my mind. With its numerous restaurants, hotels and destinations promising good services "with a view," I tend to overlook the neighboring cities and keep my eyes on the more famous establishments. Little did I know that there's a little secret of three years just kilometers before reaching the city of cool climate, sitting along Robinsons Terazza in Dasmariñas City, waiting to be discovered.

Courtyard Inn

'Location, location, location.' There is a good reason why this real estate mantra is repeated, and to experience a living testimony of this is Subic Bay's Courtyard Inn. Conveniently located along Waterfront Road, it is a witness to the beautiful sunsets by the sea and heart-pumping watersports action. It's also the perfect hub for those wanting to try out different food joints without having to ride your car.

'Ooooy, Baduya!'

'Ooooy, Baduya!'

I wanted my children to experience Naga City as I did as a child. And what better way is there than letting them taste the street food of my youth? I wanted them to savor the food that, for me, evoked fond memories of days when eating out was only for very special occasions. When everyone, including the office workers and students, went home for lunch and left the centro or downtown almost deserted. And when our favorite merienda was delivered to our doorsteps in a large bamboo basket by the street vendor while calling, “Oooooyyyy, baduya!”

The Province In The Sky

The Province In The Sky

Crowned by majestic peaks reaching to the sky, it is no wonder that early natives called the heartland of the Cordillera mountain range “bontoc”—a combination of the words “bun”, meaning heap, and “tuk”, which mean top, adjectives that, describe the region’s wild, jagged terrain. Unfortunately the first time I visited my father’s hometown was 4 years after his death in 1979, when my mother prodded my sister to bring me along to the Mountain province and meet my other relatives. I belong to the Bontoc tribe, supposedly the most warlike of the tribes of the mountain province.

Rama Mahal

I recently revisited Subic Bay for a quick weekend getaway. The last time I was in Subic was ages ago, probably back in high school. My family's weekend would be spent there, enjoying a good day of sun, sand and jetski. It was a good surprise to return to Subic, seeing so much development in the area, especially with all the new restaurants lined up for our picking.

Restaurante Platão

The website of Macau’s Restaurante Platão boasts that its executive chef, Lou Chi Seng, cooked for Macau’s governors for fourteen years until 1999, when the colony was handed back by the Portuguese to the Chinese. When we made reservations, the maître d' claimed that Restaurante Platão is considered Macau’s top restaurant. Fortunately, this bistro lives up to the hype, and shows why it deserves one glowing review after another.

Vancouver Casts Her Winter Charm

Vancouver Casts Her Winter Charm

Vancouver, Canada has always had the distinct and enviable reputation of being among the best cities in the world to live in. So it was with excitement that I planned a visit when the demands of corporate idolatry allowed me --- the long Christmas break. Although it would fall right into the freezing North American winter season, it did not matter. The best should always have something to offer. Besides, I was told that actually Vancouver is the warmest city in Canada. Winter there is “pleasant” – not as frigid as its sister cities in the east, buried in meters of glacial snow. There would be occasional flurries and light snow that melt in the midday sun. It would be tolerable for tropical mammals as myself.
