It was mesmerizing, the way indigenous materials were put together. The way shadows of the earth colors of brown, green with shades of orange yellow and blue buntings were fluttering above the huge quadrangle of the new bus terminal of Bayawan City, 102 kilometers from Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

During Good Friday, a spectacle is played out in various barangays in Pampanga and even further up in the Campangpangan speaking towns of Tarlac with sinners – mostly male – sacrificing themselves for the community by being literally crucified in a re-enactment of Christ suffering. Hordes of local and foreign tourists, including budding photographers descend and are drawn on these sites.

The Higantes Festival is just around the corner. I finally got to visit Angono, Rizal for last year’s festival. The town is known as the "Art Capital of the Philippines" and the hometown of two national artists namely Carlos "Botong" V. Francisco for painting and Lucio D. San Pedro for music. Our purpose was to check out the annual Higantes Festival as well as the fluvial procession in honor of the town patron San Clemente held every November 23.

Although it’s the season of penitence, you need not carry a cross or flagellate yourself. The heat is so unbearable night or day, it might as well be your penance. And we Filipinos indulge ourselves in so many religious celebrations such as Palm Sunday and of course the Moriones –one of the most colorful festivals celebrated in the island of Marinduque.

For as long as I can remember, people have been raving about Baguio's Flower Festival which is also known locally as the Panagbenga. But unfortunately for me, all that I could say was "Panagbeng-what?!" This year I finally had the chance to experience the Panagbenga for myself. A couple of my friends and I took the Friday off from work to go up north and at long last experience this highly acclaimed festival.
