Based on a true story, the film tells the story of journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) in his encounter with Fred Rogers to write a profile for Esquire's issue on heroes. At first, the journalist seemed cynical on who Rogers really is behind the camera, but as he spends more time with him, he soon learns how to see the world in the way Rogers did.
While Vogel is a fictional character, he is higly inspired from Tom Junod, an Esquire journalist who profiled Rogers in 1998 and shared how the man had changed his outlook in life. Just last year, Junod appeared on the hit documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor which detailed the life of the late entertainer.
The film is directed by Marielle Heller with a screenplay by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster. It stars Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, and Susan Kelechi Watson.
A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood premieres in local theaters on December 4, 2019.
